Nanjing improves water quality monitoring in rainy season

As Nanjing has launched the Level II emergency response against flood amid heavy rainfall and increased flood risks, the impact on local water quality is also under strengthened monitoring by the Nanjing Department of Ecology and Environment.

Rong Dapeng, director of the Environmental Monitoring Station in Jiangning District, said three taskforces responsible for field check, analysis and test, and data reporting have been established for the rainy season and they have kept a close eye on water quality at 32 sites every day.

The data, which reached 2,000 pieces by June 23, was reported to the district’s authorities and the Nanjing Department of Ecology and Environment.

Li Wenqing, deputy director of the Nanjing Department of Ecology and Environment, said a joint city-district work group has been established and close monitoring is underway at 22 water bodies and seven tributaries of the Yangtze River.

The timely daily analysis and close coordination among water affairs authorities will help avoid large fluctuations of water quality in the rainy season.

In the first half of this year, the proportion of water quality better than Class III in Nanjing reached 100 percent, and water quality at 10 drinking water sources also all met the standards.
